Are things changing at New Orleans Criminal Court? Our partners at The New Orleans Advocate recently reported that there were fewer jury trials at Criminal District Court than any other year going back to 2005, but there were also a higher percentage of convictions. There were 119 trials in 2013 where jurors reached a verdict or were deadlocked. In 2012, there were 187, and in 2011, more than twice as many jury trials as last year, with 270.
The conviction rate however is increasing, with the average at about 56% before Distrcit Attorney Leon Cannizzaro took office. Last year, that rate increased to around 75%. District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro joins the Eyewitness Morning News to discuss why he believes his strategies are setting a new tone in criminal court.
