His holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is in New Orleans to participate in a Tulane University conference this weekend. He’s also delivering the keynote address to Tulane graduates this Saturday.
Dr. Ron Marks, dean of the Tulane School of Social Work, spoke on the Eyewitness Morning News about the Dalai Lama’s visit.
“He is the closest thing I’ve ever come to an enlightened human being,” Marks said. “The idea in Tibetan Buddhism is through deep understanding of the nature of the mind and the nature the world and nature of humanity that one has the opportunity to shed the kind of confusion and obscurations that lead to confusion.
“He has shed this and he has had the opportunity to move into something called the enlightened state and he has chosen not to be there and rather to be here on this planet.”
