As coastal parishes, St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes have special concerns, now that we're about a week into hurricane season, so the Eyewitness Morning News has invited Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser and St. Bernard Parish’s Deputy Director of Homeland Security, John Rahaim to talk about this hurricane season.

In Plaquemines Parish, the number for special needs patients to sign up for help with evacuations is 394-3510. You can also sign up for emergency alerts here.

And in St. Bernard Parish, residents with special needs should call 278-4322. You can also sign up for emergency text message alerts here.

There will be a series of open houses coming up in St. Bernard, organized by the parish and the Lake Borgne Levee District, to discuss flood protection in the parish. The 3 meetings will target three areas: safety, flood control and responsibility. The first meetings are this Tuesday and Wednesday.
