As we near the holidays, we're also halfway through the school year, and it can be distressing for parents when they find that their child is encountering difficulty in the classroom, but effective communication between school and family can help solve the problem.

Joining the Eyewitness Morning News with more on parent-school communication is Lisa Phillips, Parent Educator at The Parenting Center at Children's Hospital.

Tips for parent-classroom communication:

  • Practice prevention by getting to know your child's teacher and his/her expectations early in the year
  • Choose the type of communication carefully
  • Before a meeting make a list of issues, questions, and possible solutions
  • Always get clarification if you are unsure of something
  • Think collaboration, rather than blame
