Louisiana is 12 in the nation for its rate of suicide, and St. Tammany Parish has one of the highest suicide rates in the state.

There are special programs offering help to prevent those deaths, and this morning for suicide prevention month Rebecca Thees with the Volunteers of America's Crisis Response Program joins the Eyewitness Morning News, to explain what those programs offer.

A walk-a-thon for suicide awareness is set for this Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in Slidell, at the Living the Word International Church, at 1000 Caruso Boulevard in Slidell.

To find out more about the help that the Volunteers of America offer in terms of suicide prevention, call (985) 674-0488.
