NEW ORLEANS - It's said to be the number one surgery in the world.

It's certainly become popular with America's baby boomers, who are opting to have cataract surgery, in many cases, in their 50s and 60s.

Ophthalmologist Stephen Brint was in the studio to tell us why.

Things you need to know about the procedure:

  • Doctors say infections are rare.
  • To avoid infection, don't swim or wear eye makeup until you heal.
  • Insurance will pay for the basic cataract surgery. If you upgrade, you will have to pay the difference.
  • You'll never have to buy glasses or contacts again.
  • Your lenses will have blue light protection to help prevent macular degeneration.
