NEW ORLEANS - It's part of the Mardi Gras tradition for police to shut down Bourbon Street at midnight, letting the revelers know that it's time to go home.
For the first time, Mayor Mitch Landrieu joined law enforcement at to help close down the celebration.
The mayor thanked the NOPD, state police and all other first responders for their efforts to make this Mardi Gras a relatively safe one.
Landrieu called this one of the most successful Mardi Gras the city has had in a long time, indicated by the massiv crowds.
He added there were a few hiccups, including a shooting Thursday along the parade route. Authorities said they were able to make an arrest immediately in that incident.
"The one on Erato Street on Thursday night, same thing. The officers were right on top of it. They ran the people down and caught them. When these things happen it's a disturbance. It's unfortunate, but out of that came incredible police response with immediate arrest," said New Orleans Police Department Supt. Ronal Serpas.
At 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Landrieu and Serpas plan to hold a news conference detailing the holiday. Serpas said he will also let the public know how many guns, which he called a "substantial number," were taken off the streets during Carnival.
