NEW ORLEANS - The state's education chief is looking to cut through some of the red tape involved with the federal "No Child Left Behind Act."

John White has unveiled proposals asking for a waiver from requirements that call for detailed school district improvement plans.

White wants to see the state focus more on measuring academic performance instead of worrying about attendance and drop out rates.

Officials want to know what the public thinks about the proposal before submitting it to Washington.
