NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The chairman of Louisiana's Republican Party is calling remarks made last week by Democrat Caroline Fayard "hate-filled and disgusting."
Among remarks attributed to Fayard, during a speech Thursday at the Washington Parish Democratic Party banquet, are these: "I hate Republicans ... They are cruel and destructive. They eat their young."
In a brief Monday interview, Fayard didn't deny the remarks, reported Sunday by a newspaper in Bogalusa.
She first said they had been taken out of context, but later added she could have been "more clear and perhaps more incisive" in criticizing Republican policies and campaigns
Fayard lost the lieutenant governor's runoff last year to Republican Jay Dardenne. She hasn't said whether she will run for statewide office this year.
