The business magazine turned to the founder and chief executive of Teach for America, Wendy Kopp, to compile its list of influential educators and education reformers.
“A longtime New Orleans business leader, Leslie (Jacobs) assembled a powerful coalition to advocate for school accountability and invest in rebuilding the teaching and principal force following Hurricane Katrina,” writes Kopp in the online article. “Leslie's ideas are shaping other states' approaches to improve underperforming schools.”
Jacobs is a former member of both the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Orleans Parish School Board. She most recently formed the local non-profit group Educate Now.
At the top of the Forbes "Powerful Educators" list is Kaya Henderson, the chancellor of Washington, D.C. Public Schools.
A Mississippi educator also makes the list. Scott Shirey, the executive director of KIPP Delta Public Schools, was hailed for developing and reforming schools that serve some of that state’s most disadvantaged children in rural areas.
