NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police are investigating a Fat Tuesday shooting on the edge of the French Quarter.

The shooting happened 8:15 p.m. near the intersection of Iberville and Rampart streets.

NOPD spokeswoman Hilal Williams said two people were shot in the leg, and their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Williams said officers responded after hearing gunshots in the area. They found one of the victims shot at the corner of Canal and Rampart, and the other victim ran to Iberville and Rampart before collapsing.

Williams said when officers arrived, they saw two people running from the scene, one with a gun.

"Both of those people were juveniles, one tried to ditch a gun which was retrieved by police," Williams said. Williams said both juveniles are in custody and charges are pending.

However, the gunman got away, police said. The suspect is a black male with a brown complexion, medium build and about 5'10". He was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and a camouflage bandanna on his head.

If you know anything about this shooting that can help investigators, call Crimestoppers at 822-1111.
