Jefferson Parish leaders say so far containment booms are holding and the worst of the oil leak remains about 14-miles off the coast of Grand Isle.
However, images of thick patches of oil in the marsh in nearby Plaquemines Parish has local leaders doubling their plans to protect the island.
"We were discussing today, plans to begin putting down pilings so that we could station boom on what is the north side of the island, so that if the oil does come into Barataria Bay, that side of Grand Isle is protected as well," said Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts.
Focus on the response effort has already forced the cancellation of this year's Seafood Festival in the town of Jean Lafitte. It was supposed to be held the last weekend in July.
Mayor Tim Kerner said canceling the festival will cost his town about $100,000 in revenue.
He said protecting the marsh from oil and helping his fishermen are more important.
"This is the most important area in the state of Louisiana," said Kerner. "We need to focus on having a secondary plan and try to do whatever we can now, not only not only to assist them in getting what is coming to them in compensation, but we need to protect that marsh as much as possible."
Kerner said calling off the festival had nothing to do with the quality of the seafood, still being caught in Barataria Bay despite the oil leak offshore.
"That's the message we don't want to send out, because the seafood is good," said Kerner.
The annual Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo is also in jeopardy.
"Right now, the command center, the unified command center in Grand Isle is at the Tarpon Rodeo Pavilion," said Roberts. "In addition to that, a lot of the hotels are occupied by relief workers that are there to respond to oil spill. If those assets are going to be occupied, then it would make it very difficult for us to pull off the rodeo."
Grand Isle Mayor David Camardelle sent out an e-mail saying that his island is still alive and open for business and that for now, the fishing rodeo is still on.
Jefferson Parish leaders are expected to meet on Thursday, to discuss whether the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo will be held this year.
Organizers canceled the International Tarpon Rodeo in nearby Golden Meadow and Fourchon.
Jesuit High School's annual fishing rodeo at Sea Brook harbor was also called off because of the oil spill.
