HARAHAN, La. -- It's the possible end of an era in Harahan as members of Colonial Golf and Country Club played their last round of golf.
More than $7 million in debt, the property is facing public auction.
It isn't often that you play a round of golf in sunny warm temperatures with a heavy heart.
But that is definitely the case Tuesday for members of Colonial Golf and Country Club. The financially strapped club will close its doors Tuesday after 84 years.
“It’s so easy to come here and play," said member Steve Mouton. "The camaraderie of the people I've met over the years, the games we play, you know it’s gonna spread out all over town.”
Member Grey Thurman said he was "very disappointed."
"You know, it’s a shame we're losing this after 84 years, really is, but I guess it’s just the times,” Thurman said.
“This is the crown jewel of the city of Harahan, and everyone's sort of wondering what’s going on, what’s going to happen?” said member Dane Doucet.
The future of the 88 acre site remains in jeopardy. It’s scheduled to go to the auction block in the middle of February.
New owners purchased the club in 2010 with hopes of developing some of the land into commercial property to pay the debt, but that plan failed to gain traction with area residents
