MERAUX, La. – An Orleans Parish sheriff’s deputy has been booked on charges of harboring a fugitive and obstruction of justice after St. Bernard deputies allege he tried to help hide a suspect from them.

Jamal Anderson, 29, who was a two-year veteran of the Orleans Sheriff’s Office, was at the home of Melisse Marmon, 33, who was wanted on warrants from Orleans and St. Bernard parishes regarding the sale of a stolen car.

According to St. Bernard deputies, Anderson lied to them when he was questioned about whether Marmon was at her home. Deputies later found her hiding in a locked bathroom.

Deputies went to Marmon’s home looking to take her into custody on arrest warrants from New Orleans and St. Bernard, Pohlmann said.

Deputies said that after initially denying that Marmon was at the location, he admitted that she was there.

Both Anderson and Marmon were being held in St. Bernard Prison pending an appearance before a judge to have bond set.

Pohlmann said Marmon was booked on warrants from New Orleans accusing her of felony theft and simple battery. She was also booked on warrants from a St. Bernard judge alleging felony theft of $6,200 in early February from a man she allegedly sold a stolen car to and possession of the stolen auto in St. Bernard, Pohlmann said.

The car had been seized by sheriff’s deputies Feb. 14 when the man who bought the car from Marmon, despite her not having a title or registration for the vehicle, called the Sheriff’s Office to report he hadn’t gotten the car paperwork from Marmony, Pohlmann said.

The vehicle, it was learned, had been reported stolen in New Orleans in 2009, Pohlmann said.
