How would you like to live in a house for 14 years without ever being assessed taxes on the building itself? Tonight at 10:00 on Channel 4, see how a St. Tammany Parish couple apparently did it.

Donald Sharp is a deputy chief in the St. Tammany Sheriff's Office. His wife works in the Covington Police Department. The assessor says she had no idea that no taxes were being assessed, until she got an anonymous complaint.

“You're living in a house and you’re not getting property taxes and you work for the sheriff's office which is the chief tax collector for the parish?” asks Rafael Goyeneche, president of the Metropolitan Crime Commission. “I mean ignorance is no defense under the law.”

How did Donald and Lynn Sharp get away with only paying $12 or $13 per year in taxes on their land for 14 years, and no taxes at all on their house?

Tonight at 10:00 on Eyewitness News NightWatch, 4 Investigates.
