BELLE ROSE, La. ― A routine traffic stop in Belle Rose, La., ended in two men being arrested by an Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Deputy for having illicit drugs.
Charles Knockum, 23, and Russel Prean, 29, were charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and cocaine.
Additionally, Knockum was charged with not wearing a seatbelt, failure to come to a complete stop and driving without a license while Prean faces additional charges of resisting an officer and failure to appear for a guilty plea in Cut Off on a simple burglary.
Deputies found 2.6 ounces of cocaine, 4.1 ounces of marijuana and $1,060 in cash.
Knockum was pulled over Friday when a deputy noticed he wasn’t wearing a seat belt and failed to come to a complete stop near the intersection of La. 308 and La. 998 near Belle Brose Primary School.
The deputy conducted a regular traffic stop and ordered Knockum, who said he didn’t have a license, out of the car.
He then approached the passenger side of the car and immediately smelled marijuana.
As Prean got out of the car, the deputy saw a clear plastic bag with what he believed to be marijuana and another one with cocaine in it.
After being handcuffed, however, Prean tried to bolt.
Knockum claimed the pot.
