METAIRIE, La. – Two dogs that deputies had to shoot after they allegedly attacked two pot-belly pigs are now in the custody of the Jefferson Parish animal shelter.
The incident began at 1451 Sigur Ave. in Bucktown around 2:50 p.m, according to Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Larry Dyess.
Dyess said neighbors alerted police after hearing squealing coming from the home. Deputies found the dogs attacking the pigs after arriving on the scene, Dyess said, and so they began using pepper spray to try to get them to let go of the pigs. Dyess said when the dogs wouldn’t let go, they shot the two dogs.
“The aggressive nature of the dogs, and the fact they may have been attacked themselves – the officers took all precautions before firing their weapons and chose to do so,” Dyess said.
Both of the dogs are still alive, but wounded, and have been taken to veterinarians. Jefferson Parish animal control officers will have to conduct a temperament test on the dogs before deciding what will happen to them.
Dyess said the owner of the dogs, whom he would not identify, lives a couple of blocks away and will likely be cited.
The owners of the pigs were apparently not at home at the time of the attack. One of the pigs is wounded and the status of the other pig is not known.
