Hurricane Katrina Memorial Groundbreaking Ceremony (Mayor C. Ray Nagin and the City of New Orleans)

Location: 5056 Canal Street, Charity Hospital Cemetery

 

Clergy, Community members, and elected officials will come together to pray and remember the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  The groundbreaking will take place at this time.  Guests will include Mayor C. Ray Nagin, General Russell Honore,  Congressman William Jefferson, Rep. Juan LaFonta, Rev. Dr. Stephen John Thurston , President, National Baptist Convention of America, Inc. ,  and Irvin Mayfield, Jr.

Ceremonial Bell Ringing and Wreath Laying (Mayor C. Ray Nagin and the City of New Orleans)

Location: 5056 Canal Street, Charity Hospital Cemetery

 

10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

The People's Hurricane Relief Fund will hold a march from the Industrial Canal (Jourdan and N. Galvez) in the Lower Ninth Ward to Congo Square

Katrina Memorial Mass

St. Louis Cathedral

 

Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes will join with priests of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the community to celebrate a special Katrina Memorial Mass at 12 noon on Wednesday, August 29 at St. Louis Cathedral. 

During the Mass, the Archbishop’s homily message will be themed towards the Katrina recovery and ongoing rebuilding in New Orleans and the surrounding areas.  The Prayers of the Faithful, will be specially focused on the victims and survivors of the storm and their continued efforts to restore their lives, homes and property as well as for protection from future devastation from hurricanes or other tragedies.

A DAY OF PRESENCE: We Matter. We Care. We Act.

Ernest N. Morial Convention Center (outside of Hall D)

 

A group of prominent business, civic and entertainment organizations have joined forces to mobilize Americans across the country to converge upon New Orleans on August 29, the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The event, "8/29, A Day of Presence," is intended to bring awareness to the nation about the slow recovery in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast Region. Some of the special guests include Susan Taylor, Angie Stone, Lynn Whitfield, Judge Mablean Ephram, Michael Eric Dyson, and Iyania Vanzant.

The People’s Hurricane Relief Fund will hold a Human Rights Tribunal where people will tell their stories of survival

Location: Pan American Building, 601 Poydras Street

Prayer Rally

Location: First Baptist Church, 5290 Canal Blvd.

Candlelight Walk and Vigil at Jackson Square

Citizens, officials, and celebrities will hold a silent candlelight vigil in Jackson Square
