Designing and maintaining the lawn and gardens around your home inspires a variety of styles. From the whimsy of cottage gardens to more meticulous and formal styles, there are lots of options to consider. TPG can help you create the perfect place for you to relax and enjoy the outdoor scenery. Personally, my favorite type of garden is a formal landscape. Here are five easy steps that can help you create a formal paradise:
Step 1: Know the Basics. Formal gardens often feature simple geometric designs. Low lying Boxwoods that line pathways create great planting pockets for great colorful plants that will light up your outdoor space.
Step 2: Create Clean Lines. Install straight walkways or slightly curved paths throughout your landscape. Creating these clean lines that border concrete of pave stones will create a sense of order and tidiness which are two key elements of any formal garden.
Step 3: Add Classic Accents. Small accents, such as pots and planters, can create a big impact in your home’s landscape. Keep it simple when putting in the accents. Small urns are great for formal gardens and have been focal points of formal gardens for centuries
Step 4: Create Cohesion and Balance. The best way to keep your landscape balanced is by repeating plant shapes and colors throughout your yard to create an organized look. Keeping your landscape symmetrical can create calming spaces that will not be an eyesore. It can also give the illusion of more space, which can make your yard feel larger and more open.
Step 5: Decorate with Containers. Using containers around your landscape can add elegance all throughout. When planting containers in formal landscapes, a great look that TPG likes to use is a Boxwood Globe planted in the middle of the pot, with cascading color surrounding it. The cascading color will give it the great look draping over the pot, while the Boxwood Globe has the simple, formal, geometric look.
