Still feeling tired when you wake up in the morning, and wishing you could take a nap during the day? You probably need to get your sleep patterns synchronized.

You may be sleeping long enough, but your sleep quality could be the problem.

And it could be a serious health problem, because studies are showing that disrupted sleep can raise the risk of blood clots -- those dangerous blobs of congealed blood that can block blood flow to major organs.

Studies suggest that surges in nervous-system activity -- found in patients with sleep apnea, which causes disrupted sleep -- may provoke excessive clotting.

That could set the stage for a heart attack, stroke, or other dangerous condition.

If you are retired or working for yourself at home, a daytime doze may be do-able for you. Twenty minutes to an hour might be all you need, but most people don’t have that option. If you get up early in the morning and work all day, you should eat dinner reasonably early, allow yourself three to four hours to let it digest and try to get to bed at roughly the same time each night. Keep the room cool and comfortable and with few if any distractions like TV. Establishing a uniform sleep routine may help you overcome the disorder but, if the problem persists, consult your doctor.
