A Houma woman is in the Terrebonne Parish Jail for allegedly trying to run down several pedestrians on a sidewalk with her car.

Responding to a call of a large fight in progress, Houma Police arrested Melanie O. White, 20, Houma, for possession of marijuana and aggravated assault after learning that she tried to hit several people walking near the corner of East and Madge Streets with her Kia Optima, according to a statement from Houma Police.

Melaine White, Houma, charged with aggravated battery and possession of marijuana.

White told police, however, that she was driving in the area when she saw several people.  White said that she “beefing” with the people from a few days earlier, and she pulled her car over to speak with them; then a fight erupted.  She said she never tried to hit the pedestrians.

While investigating the scene, police discovered a clear plastic bag, which contained marijuana in White’s car.  The marijuana was within 1000 yards of East Street School, so White was charged with having a controlled substance near or on school grounds.

White was taken to Terrebonne Parish Jail, where she, as of Wednesday, was awaiting trial or bond.
