BATON ROUGE -- State Rep. Carla Dartez of Morgan City was cited Sunday evening after hitting a pedestrian with her car.

While Dartez failed parts of the field sobriety test that was conducted on the scene, she did pass a breathalyzer test administered soon after with an acceptable "0.00" score, said Trooper Gilbert Dardar Jr., State Police Troop C spokesman.
The woman she hit, Shina Short, 24, of Gibson, suffered a broken arm and is expected to make a full recovery, Dardar said.
According to the report filed by troopers responding to the wreck on Bayou Black Road over the weekend, Dartez exhibited signs of being intoxicated, but onsite tests proved otherwise.
"I was not drinking," Dartez said. "It was just an accident."
Dartez was not asked take a blood-alcohol test.
"That decision is always at our discretion," Dardar said, adding that blood tests are usually requested for more serious wrecks, and are required by state law in those that result in critical or fatal injuries.
Dartez, who is up for re-election Oct. 20 and signed up for next month’s election with the Clerk of Court’s Office Tuesday, said she "feels horrible" about the situation.
"I didn’t even see her," Dartez said. "Thank God she was OK."
The lawmaker was given a ticket that requires her to appear in court on a charge of improper lane usage.
This isn’t Dartez’s first wreck of note, nor is it her first run-in with the law.
In 2003, she suffered four skull fractures and a dislocated shoulder from a motorcycle crash during Mardi Gras.
Earlier in 1998, she also was booked with a first-offense DWI, in addition to driving without headlights, improper lane usage and speeding.
Dartez, a Democrat, represents Terrebonne and St. Mary parishes in the state House of Representatives.
