According to Blair Foster, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, the incident occurred at 9:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Jefferson Road, near the end of North 11th Street.
Foster said narcotics officers with the sheriff’s office and the Hammond Police Department were investigating possible criminal activity at a residence in the area when a vehicle approached the home.
Authorities ordered the man out of the vehicle, but he did not comply with their instructions and ran his car into one officer, Foster said. Police opened fire on the car, killing the driver.
The driver of the car has not been identified.
