An 18-year-old man turned himself in to authorities after leading police on a lengthy, high speed chase during which a police car and another vehicle were struck and a deputy suffered minor injuries.

Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office

Andre McKay

According to Livingston Parish Sheriff Willie Graves, deputies tried to pull over a car driven by Andre Bertel McKay after seeing it in Albany near I-12. Graves said the deputies knew that there were outstanding warrants on McKay, but that the attempt to pull over the car caused McKay to speed off and a chase ensued.

A police car driven by Deputy Clint Walker and another driven by another deputy boxed McKay’s car in on I-12, but Graves said McKay rammed into the back of Walker’s unit, causing it to crash on the guardrails. Walker had a minor head injury and was treated and released from North Oaks Hospital.

Graves said the chase continued into Hammond where McKay’s car struck a large Ford van and was boxed in by a deputy. McKay then took off on foot and deputies began a search that included dogs and a helicopter.

Hammond City Assistant Chief of Police Kenny Corkern made contact with McKay’s family who in turn convinced him to turn himself in.

The suspect was taken to City Police Headquarters were he was issued tickets for Hit and Run & Careless Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

He was then arrested and booked on the following charges:

Aggravated Flight from an officer

Hit and Run driving

Vehicular Negligent injuring

Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle

He will be held in this jail until he can be transported to Livingston Parish where he will be booked on the following Livingston Parish charges:

Disturbing the Peace

Interfering with a police officer

Battery on a police officer

Resisting arrest by flight

Other charges could be filed pending a review of the incident.
