Seven-year-old girl killed in crash
12:52 PM CDT on Tuesday, June 19, 2007
PONCHATOULA -- A seven-year-old girl died over the weekend when the car she was riding in flipped over and ejected her from the vehicle, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s deputies said.
According to Blair Foster, a sheriff’s office spokesperson, the incident took place around 7 p.m. near Garden Drive.
Officers said Michelle Lynn Clarke was driving northbound in a 1988 Toyota Camry station wagon as the car approached a sharp turn and began to veer off the road. Clarke jerked the steering wheel and forced the car back across the road into oncoming traffic. The car then left the roadway for a second time and flipped over.
Clarke fractured her right arm in the crash, Foster said. The seven-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The girl was the driver’s daughter.
Another passenger, a six-month-old boy, sustained no injuries in the crash, Foster said.
Clarke was charged with negligent homicide and was booked into the parish jail in Amite, Foster said. Blood and urine samples were taken from Clarke for analysis.
