Deputies in St. Tammany Parish shot a man who attacked them with a hammer Saturday night following a standoff, according to a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Michael Lachney of Madisonville, underwent surgery Saturday night. His condition is unknown.

According to spokesman George Bonnett, deputies responded to a 911 call of a man threatening to harm himself or his family and surrounded a residence on Carmel Rd. between Mandeville and Abita Springs.

Bonnett said that when deputies approached the driveway, Lachney ran out to his car and retrieved a claw hammer and threatened the deputies.

Attempts to peacefully talk Lachney into dropping the hammer failed and he struck several of the deputies before he was shot, according to Bonnett.

Following the shooting, Bonnett said Lachney continued to kick after being handcuffed and even fought with EMS while in the ambulance.
