Student government leaders came up with the idea and took it to school administrators – the result is a 24 foot by seven foot fountain.
The water spouts represent the area where Katrina and Rita hit land, and there are inscriptions marking every parish and county along the Gulf Coast that were declared disasters.
School leaders expect the fountain to be a focal point of the campus for years to come.
“You can't find anybody on our campus, faculty, staff or students right now, who wasn't impacted by the storm,” said University Provost John Crain. “Years from now, that probably won't be the case. The students will graduate, faculty will retire. But this will always be here, and people who come by, years from now, who weren't personally impacted by the storm, will remember it because of this.”
The official unveiling ceremony was scheduled for Wednesday at 3 p.m.
