Kentwood man killed in crash; driver charged
03:59 PM CDT on Saturday, November 1, 2008
A one-vehicle crash in Tangipahoa Parish sent a Tangipahoa man to the hospital and killed the passenger. Police suspect that impairment played a role in the crash and charged the driver with driving while intoxicated, said State Police.
Friday evening, Calvin Brumfield, 39, and his passenger, Kenneth James, 37, Kentwood, were taken to the hospital, after Brumfield lost control of his car and ran off the road on US 51 in Tangipahoa, traveling off the road and hitting a tree, police said. James was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.
Once Brumfield was released from the hospital for minor injuries, he was charged with careless operation, no driver’s license, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and negligent homicide, police said.
Police said they suspect that alcohol and/or drugs played a role in the crash, and the occupants of the car were not wearing seat belts. Blood was obtained for analysis.
