Landrieu, Kennedy face off in debate tonight

02:01 PM CDT on Sunday, October 12, 2008

Chad Bower / Eyewitness News

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The two major contenders for Louisiana's Senate race face off in their second debate of the campaign season, only the stakes are higher: it's the first debate to be broadcast statewide.

WWL-TV

State Treasurer John Kennedy.

Democratic incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu is seeking her third term in office, while Republican state Treasurer John Kennedy is making his second bid for the U.S. Senate.

The election is November 4. The Sunday debate will be televised by Louisiana Public Broadcasting.

Landrieu calls Kennedy a political opportunist who switched from the Democratic to Republican parties last year only because he was seeking higher office. She's been calling him "confused."

Kennedy says Landrieu is a tax-and-spend liberal who doesn't represent the views of most Louisiana voters. He says the Washington political system is broken and Landrieu is part of that.

WWLTV will also be holding a debate between the two candidates Oct. 22.
