Nagin rescinds ban on new trailer park construction

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin rescinded his ban on the creation of new trailer park sites Wednesday.

The announcement came at an early afternoon press conference.

Nagin had previously banned the creation of the new sites after he said FEMA went against his wishes in continuing to build a trailer park near the Lakewood section of Algiers. Some of the neighborhood residents said they were treated rudely by FEMA workers.

At the time, Nagin said he wanted work stopped at all FEMA trailer sites and he wanted FEMA's crews in New Orleans to be replaced.

Wednesday, Nagin had changed his tune.

"This is my buddy today, Mr. Jameson," said Nagin of FEMA's Gill Jameson, who accompanied him at the announcement. "I had to take a very aggressive tact to get attention."

Nagin and Jameson said they expect another 6,500 trailers to be made available to New Orleans residents within the next two months.

The Algiers site is still on hold indefinitely, according to Nagin.
