Airport officials remind passengers to leave guns at home
02:34 PM CST on Wednesday, December 7, 2005
Ten loaded guns have been confiscated by airport security since October,
according to officials at Armstrong International Airport.
Though the problem is apparently happening across the country, airport
officials said the percentage of incidents was much higher in New
Orleans, especially considering that fewer people are flying in and out
of the city right now.
WWL-TV Security officials at Armstrong Airport said they've recently taken guns off of passengers who brought the firearms for security purposes.
Airport officials said that in most cases the firearms were apparently carried on by residents who bought them for security purposes after Hurricane Katrina. A spokesman said those found with the guns varied from businessmen to ex-law enforcement and even one criminal.
Officials said the incidents are a reminder to passengers that entering the airport with a loaded gun causes a security threat to everyone, airport security officials said.
They’re asking anyone who might have bought a gun for protection, to not forget about them when going through security; doing so could result in hefty damages.
