Studies and promotional videos have emerged Europe claiming that Nutraceuticles can improve your skin from the inside out.

“If you take vitamins and they are good for your internal health, then it stands to reason that they are going to impact your skin as well,” said Dr. Patricia Farris, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

Cosmeceuticals are creams you put on your skin, but Nutraceuticles are vitamins, antioxidants and minerals you swallow to help your body. Imedeen Prime Renewal is a daily supplement that combines several ingredients: from soy and fish protein, to tea, grape seed and tomatoes.

Its creators claim it could significantly reduce wrinkles, dark spots, sagging and dark circles in three to six months.

“When it was tested in double-blind vehicle controlled studies, and these were fairly large studies, over 100 patients did see statistically significant improvement in a variety of parameters of photo aging,” Farris said.

Another study showed Dermavite also made significant skin improvements. And doctors said Heliocare was an oral, sun protective product that neutralized a lot of the damaging ultraviolet light from the sun reducing burns. But what can some one realistically expect from Nutraceuticles?

“Food is a very important part of how your skin looks. If you eat a healthy diet and you eat your greens like your mother told you, then you're going to have better looking skin,” said Dr. William P. Coleman III, dermatologic surgeon. “Taking specific ingredients out of different foods and trying to turn them into things that will actually change your skin has so far been pretty unsuccessful.”

According to Dr. Farris, while there haven’t been many studies to determine the long-lasting impact of Nutraceuticles, some of the studies have been beneficial in getting dermatologists to appreciate the possibilities of such supplements.

A while back well known Connecticut dermatologist, Dr. Nick Perricone, came out with the ten super foods that lead to beautiful skin.

They included the Allium family, like garlic onions and leeks, barley, and other green foods, such as wheat grass and algae, buckwheat, beans and lentils, hot peppers, nuts and seeds, sprouts, yogurts and kefir pro-biotic milk. But the super food he rated number one was Acai.

Acai is a powerful antioxidant drink that mixes the juice from a dark berry taken from the Brazilian rainforest with 18 other powerful antioxidant fruits, such as pomegranate, grapes and blueberries. Doctors know that antioxidants like vitamins C and E are good for overall health, and while it's just a theory, some doctors said it made sense that it could help your skin.

“It's conceivable, because you know we know a lot of skin damage is really related to oxidative stress. It's DNA damage caused by ultraviolet light,” said Dr. Henri Roca, LSUHSC, Family-Integrative Medicine.

But while the facts continues to emerge on the difference Nutraceuticals can make, doctors do agree on two things: healthy foods and supplements won't hurt and may even help, but you can take all the antioxidants in the world and it's not going to counteract the top reasons why our skin sags, develops wrinkles and brown spots: the sun and smoking.
