Houma man is stabbed, hit by car in fight over beer

03:51 PM CDT on Monday, March 17, 2008

Robert Zullo / Houma Courier

HOUMA -- A 22-year-old man is hospitalized with serious injuries after he was stabbed and run over by a car Saturday night following a fight that started over a beer, police say.

James Mataya, 20, and Jose Sandobal, 22, began fighting shortly before 8 p.m. outside the trailer they shared at 2611 Matthews Court, allegedly because Mataya wanted another beer.

"Jose told James he was not getting a beer, and they proceeded fighting," Houma Police Lt. Todd Duplantis said. "Mataya grabbed a knife and stabbed Jose in the lower back."

A third man, 29-year-old Benito Ortega, 132 Turtle Court, Houma, ran over Sandobal after he was stabbed, though he told police he didn’t realize he hit him, Duplantis said.

"He’s claiming he was unaware that he ran over Jose," Duplantis said.

Sandobal was taken to Terrebonne General Medical Center with a cut to his lower back from the stabbing and "severe upper body trauma" from the car collision, police said. He was later transferred to a hospital in New Orleans, Duplantis said, adding his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Mataya was arrested at the scene. He is charged with attempted second-degree murder.

Ortega was arrested at a bar on La. 182 after police found his tan Chevrolet Blazer parked outside. Witnesses say that car was used to hit Sandobal.

Ortega is charged with serious injury hit-and-run driving.

Both Ortega and Sandobal remain in the Terrebonne Parish jail. They are scheduled to appear before a judge this morning to have their bonds set.
