A closer look at some areas of town targeted for financial help

10:07 PM CDT on Thursday, March 29, 2007

The following is a closer look at some of the 17 parts of town targeted for one of three levels of financial help.

The Lower Ninth Ward is one of two areas listed under the 'rebuild' category, receiving $70 million. It targets the historic Holy Cross area, and provides incentives to encourage business to form a commercial corridor along St. Claude Avenue.

Harrison Avenue in Lakeview is one of six-zones targeted under the 'redevelopment' classification, each receiving up to $19 million. The funding would help revitalize neighborhoods, plus pay for repairs in the commercial corridor, to encourage business to locate there.

There are nine 'renewal' zones in the plan, those needing the least city help, and eligible for up to $6 million. As an example, in the Broadmoor area, the funds would be used to re-open the Rosa Keller library and civic center, plus find new occupants for empty homes and businesses.

Some other areas targeted for help:

The area near South Carrollton and I-10, which used to have a number of business but has seen several demolitions recently.

Gentilly Boulevard at Elysian Fields, which is near Dillard University and Brother Martin High School.

In Central City, the area at South Claiborne and Toledano, which is a block from Louisiana Avenue and the C.J. Peete Housing Development.

St. Bernard Avenue and Ap Tureaud Avenue.

New Orleans East Plaza.

Broad Street at Lafitte Greenway.

Oretha C. Haley Blvd.

Robert E. Lee Blvd. at Parish Avenue.

Canal Street.

Freret Street Farmers Market.

Tulane Avenue at South Jefferson Davis Parkway.

St. Roch Avenue Market and Neutral Ground.
