Signs of recovery post-Katrina were evident Saturday in St. Bernard Parish, as hundreds turned out for the “Art in April” festival.

The event was held at the St. Bernard court house with lots of food and music, as well as arts and crafts and puppet shows for kids.

Local artist and photographer Meryl Leiva was also on hand trying to find new canvases for her artwork.

Leiva has been taking empty slabs in St. Bernard Parish and turning them into works of art.

Using temporary paint and chalk, she’s created art that reflects the families that used to live there.

Anyone who would like for their slab to be painted can contact Leiva at stbernardslabart@hotmail.com.
