Coast Guard cleans up oil sheens near Grand Isle
04:28 PM CDT on Saturday, June 28, 2008
The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of two oil sheens near Grand Isle.
The Coast Guard said that almost all of the oil that washed ashore has been cleaned away.
Lt. Commander Molly Wike says about three miles of the beach was closed Friday, and 95 percent of the affected area was reopened Saturday afternoon.
She says the offshore sheen included debris including candy wrappers and oil filters. She says there was not any debris in the one that washed ashore.
The first sheen was reported Thursday six miles from Grand Isle in the Gulf of Mexico, and the second was reported three miles from the beach of Grand Isle on Friday, Coast Guard officials said.
