Scalise beat out Democrat Gilda Reed this past weekend in an election to fill the vacant first congressional seat.

Scalise resigned from his seat in the state senate on Tuesday.

One of his first tasks will be to meet with President Bush and Republican members of congress.

President Bush called Scalise on Saturday to congratulate him on his victory and the two Republicans discussed hurricane recovery.
