Only about a third of Louisiana residents impacted by Hurricanes Katrina or Rita feel they have ‘mostly recovered’ from the storms’ effects more than two and a half years later.

The report compiled by the Louisiana Family Recovery Corps showed that two-thirds of the residents feel like they aren’t close to recovery yet.

“That sounds about right,” said Jim Kelly, the Co-President of Catholic Charities. He said he is basing his assessment on the number of people his organization has helped – more than 850,000 to date.

“The two greatest needs are for us to have comprehensive mental health care, and the second piece of that is a place for people to stay – homes and apartments.”

Only about 20 percent of the people surveyed felt there were enough resources available to aid the recovery. Kelly agrees and says you only need look past the most famous areas to see the impact.

“Sure our tourist areas, and our high ground, Uptown, for the most part, are in pretty good shape,” he said. “But you start to drive through some of the core neighborhoods like Gentilly, the Ninth Ward, New Orleans East and you look around and think you have a ways to go.”

The report found that about 40 percent of people still displaced would consider moving back home to the New Orleans area, while 37 percent said they would not and 20 percent were undecided.
