Ex-FEMA trailer residents start housing effort

BAKER, La. -- Former residents of a FEMA trailer park hope to raise $30 million to get other victims of Hurricane Katrina into neighborhoods of modular homes.
Leader Charlotte McGee says that although most people have moved from the trailers and into apartments or motels, most still need more permanent housing.

The charity grew out of Renaissance Village, a Federal Emergency Management Agency trailer park near Baker.
Although the storm destroyed their homes, too, directors of the group -- Katrina Rebirth Promise Land -- won't be eligible for the homes it builds.
Robert Herring of modular homes dealer Herring Homes in Denham Springs says the homes would have nine-foot ceilings and be built according to Louisiana's residential building code. He says land and installation would cost about $150,000 per house.
Homes could be set up anywhere with affordable land. But to keep costs down, the charity hopes to group homes together as much as possible.
