02:36 PM CDT on Saturday, June 21, 2008
CHALMETTE, La. -- The National Park Service plans to fix damage Hurricane Katrina caused to the Chalmette National Cemetery in St. Bernard Parish.
The cemetery with 15,000 headstones was flooded and the Park Service wants to repair collapsed walls and do restoration work throughout the cemetery, which lies on the grounds of the Battle of New Orleans.
Buried there were veterans of the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II and the Vietnam War. Four soldiers from the War of 1812 were also buried there, one of whom fought in the Battle of New Orleans.
The Park Service is looking for contractors to do work, which is expected to take about a year and cost up to $4.5 million.
