Jury rules former Tulane football player guilty of attempted manslaughter
07:15 PM CDT on Sunday, June 22, 2008
The jury in a murder trial involving Ray Boudreaux Jr., a former Tulane football player, has ruled him guilty on three counts of attempted manslaughter.
He is also guilty of one count of aggravated battery, but he is not guilty of one count of attempted second degree murder.
The sentencing is set for July 22.
Boudreaux and another key witness testified Saturday that Boudreaux was protecting himself.
The former Tulane University running back said it was self-defense, saying he was attacked in front of the Utopia night club on Bourbon Street.
A defense witness backed up that testimony, saying it was Boudreaux and a group of Boudreaux's family members who were attacked outside the club. That witness also said Boudreaux was acting in self defense.
The witness, head of security at Utopia, said the men attacked Boudreaux as instigators, adding they had a reputation for fighting.
One of the stabbing victims gave an entirely different account of what happened Friday, saying Boudreaux and his group were the aggressors.
Boudreaux, an honor roll student, was suspended by Tulane after the arrest.
Central to both the prosecution and defense – the surveillance vide which captured the brawl. New Orleans Police said Boudreaux is seen stabbing five people. Prosecutors are counting on the video to speak for itself while a defense witness said it doesn’t tell the entire story.
Attorneys on both sides of the case declined to comment, but shortly after his arrest in September, Boudreaux, a former Tulane running back, spoke about the situation.
"I don't know any of the victims, and I'm terribly sorry for what happened and I feel very, very bad,” Boudreaux said. “I'm praying for the victims and I use that term loosely. I was attacked. I don't know any of those guys."
That’s the point defense attorneys continued to drive home Sunday morning during closing arguments.
