A day before he was set to fly to California for a second round of chemotherapy treatment, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee took part in the dedication ceremony of the Gong-Gong Garden and Putting Course which was recently constructed on the campus of Grace King High School in Metairie.

The putt-putt course was designed for special needs children at the school. The idea had even captured the interest of actor Christopher Reeve, who challenged Erich Sollenberger, the director of the special needs complex at Grace King, to a game of put-put when the project was completed.

Reeve died a short time later, but through Sheriff Lee and some engineering students at Tulane University who designed the high tech putters, the course was able to be completed.

The name Gong-Gong means wise and honored grandfather in Chinese; it is what Sheriff’s Lee’s grandchildren, who were on hand to help in the dedication ceremony, refer to him as.
