DuBos: Lawmakers feel burned

05:53 PM CDT on Monday, June 30, 2008

Eyewitness News Political Analyst Clancy DuBos had these thoughts on Jindal's veto of the legislative pay raise.

On whether vetoing the raise was the right thing to do:

‘Yeah, but he didn’t need to let it get to this point. He could have been the adult in the room 10, 12 weeks ago when this came up. You heard Senator Ann Duplessis, who authored this bill say, ‘All he had to do was tell us one time, we would have walked away,’ which is true. The legislature needed the governor’s cover and they needed his commitment and I believe some legislators are going to be upset with him and it’s going to linger, because, in effect, he strung them along and they got all the way out there, voting for that pay raise that is now gone. So, now they still have the voter anger and they didn’t get the raise.’

On whether the people had their say:

‘I think it’s a confluence of things – post-Katrina, people in south Louisiana are energized like never before. I think the Internet, the blogs, e-mail, makes it easier to get information and to voice your concerns to legislators and to be heard as a group. I think Jindal definitely listened to the voters.’

On whether lawmakers are mad the raise is gone:

‘I’m not so sure lawmakers are mad that he took away their raise. I think their anger is that he led them down this path and dropped it at the end. If he had said, eight weeks ago, ‘Guys, this is a bad idea, don’t do it,’ they would have all said, ‘OK Governor,’ and this would have died before it ever got started. He told them, ‘Go ahead, I’ll let you do your own thing,’ and then he pulled the plug on them. They’re feeling like they’ve been strung along.’

On what will happen with the recall petitions:

‘I think the recalls will fizzle out. It’s hard to stay angry when the thing that’s making you angry isn’t there anymore.’

On whether he’ll have trouble working with some legislators after this:

‘I think he’s going to have to work hard at it.’
