Riley: Presence of National Guard, State Police has helped
12:31 PM CDT on Monday, July 3, 2006
Progress has been made in the city’s fight to curb crime with the help of the National Guard and State Police, New Orleans Police Superintendent Warren Riley said Monday. With the additional manpower, Riley said the NOPD was able to concentrate on what were called criminal hotspots in the city, which resulted in a number of arrests, including nearly two dozen for curfew violations. Despite the presence of added law enforcement and National Guard troops, one of those hotspots, the Central City area, saw two more murders over the weekend. Riley said even with the extra help, the NOPD can’t stop every criminal. “This is a situation where it’s something that we can’t stop always,” Riley said.
