N.O. City Council to investigate claims of police misconduct

NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans City Council criminal justice committee will meet Wednesday to discuss allegations of police misconduct.

The meeting was called after Officer Ashely Terry was suspended while being investigated for pulling her gun and threatening people outside the Treme Community Center. Also suspended was David Ellis, a five-year veteran of the force, who was among the officers investigating the Terry incident.

Chief Warren Riley has said Ellis and other officers responded to the calls about Terry but did not file a report. A police statement said an investigation determined that Ellis may not have acted appropriately when he arrived.

Councilman James Carter says the council plans to hire an independent monitor for the police department which he says should help avoid similar claims in the future. Carter expects the monitor to be hired in the next couple of months.

He says Wednesday's meeting will be used to discuss the new position, listen to citizens' concerns and allow Riley to speak to the committee.
