Lawyers will present their opening arguments Friday in a high-profile murder trial where a man is accused of gunning down Samantha Jaume as her children watched.

Dominic Robinson is the alleged triggerman in the July 4, 2001 slaying of Jaume. He’s charged with first-degree murder.

Jaume, 25, was murdered as she was unloading groceries in the Woodridge subdivision near Mandeville. Robinson allegedly demanded she give her car keys to him; when she denied, police said he shot her in the head as her 4-year-old daughter watched and her 7-year-old son talked to a 911 dispatcher.

Police say it was a botched attempt to steal her SUV so it could be sold for drugs.

Robinson is also currently serving time in Angola Prison for kidnapping and harming a man during a carjacking. That happened a month after Jaume was killed.

District Attorney Walter Reed said he is seeking the death penalty.
