Plaquemines Parish Essay: After Hurricane Katrina
03:44 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 28, 2007
My name is Robin Drury. Right now I’m eleven. When Hurricane Katrina came through on August 29, 2005, I was nine.
Hurricane Katrina ripped through lower Plaquemines Parish in Buras, LA. I live ten minutes away. I had a brother and a sister at the time.
Well after Katrina, we stayed with my Nana and Papa for a week in Ruston, LA. Then we went to my Uncle Stevie’s house in Ponchatoula, LA for about two months.
Then we moved, still in Ponchatoula but to a four bedroom apartment at Live Oak Apartments. At around Christmas time, my mom and dad brought my older brother, littler sister, and me to the Orange Festival in Belle Chasse, LA. Then we went to our flooded out doublewide trailer in Venice, LA.
Two months after that we came down every weekend. And in April our new doublewide came. We started to move in it a week or so later. Then in May we moved in for good. That summer we had a calm hurricane season and not much going on. In August of 2006, school started.
I go to Boothville-Venice Elementary in Boothville, LA. I was going to the fifth grade. In October I turned eleven. Then at the end of October to November my mom got pregnant. Then Christmas came and we got to choose Disney World or go-carts. Of course we got the go-carts. In May, school was about over and then came summer.
To me this summer was boring. And with summer comes hurricane season. Calm so far. Then on August 1, 2007, my mom had my new baby brother, Beau. He’s five days old. My dreams for Plaquemines Parish, New Orleans, and anywhere else affected is to hopefully get back together!
