HOUMA -- The evening drive-time disc jockey for a popular Houma radio station faces a child-molestation charge that has resulted in his being jailed in lieu of a $100,000 bond.
WWL-TV
Michael Lee Moss, 49, known as "Shotgun" to listeners of KXOR-FM, which presents a contemporary rock format, faces a single charge of molestation of a juvenile, according to Terrebonne Parish jail records and information confirmed with detectives.
Capt. Malcolm Wolfe, commander of detectives at the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office, said this morning he is still awaiting a full report of the incident leading to Moss’ Friday arrest.
Wolfe said the charge did not appear to stem from anything work related, and that the child -- whom co-workers were told was a girl younger than 12 -- is not related to Moss.
"We’re all in shock," said Danny Fletcher, vice president and general manager of Sunburst media, the Houma company that owns the station, as well as three others. "You just think you know somebody. and with accusations like this you are scratching your head wondering. The staff is in shock and dismay."
Fletcher said on-air personalities have a morality clause in their contracts that allows summary dismissal on the mere basis of an arrest or indictment, with no need for conviction to follow.
Fletcher said detectives spoke with him Friday about their desire to question Moss. At that time, he suspended his employee.
Moss voluntarily accompanied detectives to the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office, where he was charged with the crime.
His bond was originally set at $35,000 and raised to $100,000.
On Monday, Fletcher said he made the decision to terminate Moss because of the arrest.
Fletcher and others connected with the station said they were especially saddened because of the station’s on-going public-service work on behalf of organizations like the Haven, which offers help to victims of sex crimes and domestic violence.
