Jason Barrette

Detective Jason Barrette was arrested following an investigation into reports of ‘doctor shopping.’

Doctor shopping is described as happening when someone sees several doctors at the same time in an effort to get multiple prescriptions for the same or similar controlled substances during a short time period.

Normand said the investigation began after Barrette had filed what he described as ‘suspicious’ police reports where it was alleged that the pain medications Percocet and Vicodin had been stolen from his personal car while parked at a business on Manhattan Blvd. in Harvey. A patrol division supervisor questioned the validity of the reports.

According to Normand, the investigation showed that between December 2006 and July 2008, Barrette had been treated by 27 different doctors, many without the others’ knowledge and he received prescriptions for Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Morphine, Percocet and Hydrocodon.

Normand said Barrette had the prescriptions filled at 12 different pharmacies.

He said Barrette acknowledged that the two vehicle burglaries he reported didn’t happen. In addition, a gun he reported stolen was found at his residence.
