Former Insurance Commissioner Jim Brown gets his law license back

Jim Brown, the former La. insurance commissioner, is allowed to practice law once more, after a ruling from the Supreme Court of Louisiana.

Brown spent six months in prison after lying to the FBI during an investigation into former Gov. Edwin Edwards.

“After considering the evidence presented,” read the ruling from the court, “the hearing committee concluded that the petitioner has met his burden of proving that he is entitled to be reinstated to the practice of law, subject to his obtaining the mandatory continuing legal education hours for 2008.”

Brown had his license suspended for three years.

In 2000, he was forced to resign as insurance commissioner after he was convicted and served the six months in federal prison at Oakdale in Allen Parish.  Brown has denied his wrongdoing in the crime.

Brown has spent his time since the sentence staying involved in Louisiana politics, writing several books and hosting a radio show in New Orleans.
